One of the most famous soldiers assigned to the Benicia Barracks was Lieutenant Sam Grant, later known as General Ulysses S. Grant Lincoln’s Civil War Commander-in-Chief, and later President of the United States.
Grant’s career in California was apparently very boring for the young officer as he was reprimanded by his commanding officer for excessive drinking.
